We have been waiting for this moment for a looong time!! It's time to know if our engine works after a few years off. Did it work? I guess you need to watch this episode to find out!! 😉
If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. Are you curious? Don't forget to subscribe and to join us every Monday for a new episode!!

    • @Odd Life Crafting But if i understand it correctly, he just does start the engine. If it doesnt start, he does an diagnose and this would cost extra i guess? So its pretty much just trying to start an engine. But anyway... you did the right think in skipping that step, because there was no actuall reason for the engine not to run.

    • On thing is turning on the other is turning on an engine after years. Bringing extra starter engine if necessary. Extra fuel tank. A battery, etc 😉

  • Do you know what a good skipper does before he turns on a motor for the first time that day. He checks three levels water coolant, engine oil and transmission fluid. You never want to have someone ask you after a problem have you checked the fluids and your response being well I checked them yesterday it’s a red flag and a sign of a bad skipper. The skipper and first mate should know how to do it and what to do if they are low. By the way all of your sea cox will need to be removed examined. If they are older than 5 years replace them. Remember that’s the only thing between you and the ocean.

  • Get him to show you how to bleed the engine. Diesel is great fuel compared to gas but the engine is very finicky about running out of fuel. So write down the steps on bleeding the air. You don’t want have to keep asking folks how and what to bleed it’s important. Very important

  • I know what your saying about warming up the oil, but I don’t agree. Oil is not that expensive I would have gotten out as much as you could have then topped it off. Then I would have done the warming and changed it again. You can still stick a strong magnet to the bottom of the oil pan outside.

    John TurnerJohn Turner9 dagar sedan
  • I’m not sure how much attention you were paying when the machinist was tightening the bolts on the head, he was doing a crisscross pattern before he began doing the final tightening. That’s actually a good habit to get into for everything your replacing. Do a little then cross also if the piece is longer like windows start in the middle and work to the ends.

  • Duca and Ro, thanks for yor videos, I just began to see you and I feel like I am with you the way you relate everything. I got a question, but it is not about the motor byself, the mechanical part for the water propeller blade: the axis and bearings, have you made a maintenance of those? be aware of that! Too many years for those parts seems to need som chekout!

    becerragusbecerragus14 dagar sedan
    • Well, it seems like the propeller is in pretty good shape, so we are not gonna do anything by now to it, but for sure we are gonna keep an eye on it

Hehe

  • Get the new alternator as it’s new and less chance of breaking down at the most inconvenient time.....another suggestion would be a new starter type called permanent magnet reduction drive...it would turn engine over much faster with less draw..I can tell by the sound you have the old type of direct drive...the newer starter has ball bearings as opposed to bushings...

  • Let the sun and wind recharge your "appliances" battery. Standard alternator has the right specs to recharge the starter battery. In fact, renewable energy sources can also recharge your starter battery, depending how the electric circuit is configured.
